Wills Eye Institute has been an active leader in the field of ophthalmology. It is the nation’s oldest and largest eye care facility. It was founded in 1832 from the $116,000 bequest by Philadelphia Quaker merchant James Wills, Jr. As a medical specialty institution from its inception, Wills was unique from the start. The Institute quickly became recognized as a pioneer institution for the prevention and treatment of eye diseases.
